Tell The Bahamas its Time to Build on Caribbean Support for Justice

The Caribbean has long been a key player in the global fight against impunity.

We’re now calling on The Bahamas to build on this proud tradition by becoming a member of the ICC.

The Caribbean kick-start
In 1989 Trinidad and Tobago kick-started the landmark process that led to the establishment of the ICC, requesting the UN General Assembly to consider creating a universal court to prosecute the worst crimes known to humanity.

However The Bahamas, along with Haiti and Jamaica, remain outside the ICC system.

A global call for ratification
We are not the only ones calling The Bahamas to bolster the global fight against impunity. In January 2013 seven states urged the island nation to ratify the Rome Statute during the 15th Universal Periodic Review of the UN Human Rights Council.

One step away  
The Bahamas signed the Rome Statute in December 2000. Over the past years, the government has been working to assess the current state of domestic legislation to ensure compatibility with the Rome Statute and move forward with implementing legislation. Once these domestic requirements are met, the country can commence its ratification process.
