The Problem

Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Conflict

In situations of recurring conflict, women and girls often bear the greatest burden.

Lawlessness and instability leave women vulnerable to sexual and gender-based violence. Indigenous women, women with disabilities, women from rural or minority communities, and women human rights defenders are often the targets of such abuse.

Historically, perpetrators of these horrific crimes have not been held accountable; and sexual and gender-based violence has been seen as unfortunate collateral damage of war. In order to prevent cycles of violence against women and build sustainable peace, we must end impunity for these crimes and bring justice to the victims.

In honor of the International Day of the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we are standing with women seeking justice and peace.

Our Solution

Empower women seeking justice and peace

Women have a critical role to play in building lasting peace.

Historically, perpetrators of these horrific crimes have not been held accountable; and sexual and gender-based violence has been seen as unfortunate collateral damage of war. In order to prevent cycles of violence against women and build sustainable peace, we must end impunity for these crimes and bring justice to the victims.

The ICC is the first international court to recognize crimes against women as war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and throughout the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, the CICC is working to raise awareness of these facts and help women seek justice for themselves and their communities in order to end impunity for sexual violence in conflict. Women not only deserve to see justice and redress, but also have a critical role to play in building lasting peace.

Join the fight to end impunity for sexual and gender-based crimes

By leveraging the power of global activist networks, we will amplify the voices of women speaking out on issues of atrocity prevention and impunity for sexual and gender-based violence; empower them to seek justice and participate in peacebuilding efforts; train lawmakers and law enforcers in the principles of gender justice; and bring the diverse, locally-grounded perspectives of our coalition members to those with power to create real, systemic change in our global systems of justice and security.

This Giving Tuesday, support the work of the CICC to end impunity for conflict-related sexual violence and empower women seeking justice and peace.

MEET THE WOMEN LEADING THE FIGHT FOR GENDER JUSTICE

“The role of women's organizations is crucial for advocacy in order to move forward in overcoming obstacles in cases of violence against women committed in armed conflict. Justice cannot remain a utopia for women; it needs to be included in the construction of a democratic and peaceful society.”

Adriana Maria Benjumea Rúa, Director – Corporación Humanas Colombia

“For women living in countries with armed conflicts, the basis for many of the forms of gender-based violence are similar to those expressed in peaceful countries, however, they become exaggerated in scale and brutality during war. Today is a good opportunity to remember our common bonds."

Brigid Inder, Executive Director - Women's Initiatives for Gender Justice

‘‘I believe that we must have the courage to address situations that few have the courage to address: ending impunity; violence against women; sexual and gender-based crimes in conflict; access to justice and legal information; and investigating and prosecuting high-level perpetrators. To achieve a more just society where perpetrators are held accountable and victims receive justice, both men and women have an obligation to break the silence.”

Brigitte Chelebian, Executive Director – Justice Without Frontiers

“Sexual and gender-based violence is a real issue in Mali, with women being raped, deprived of their freedom, or used as sex slaves. International and regional treaties and conventions, particularly Resolution 1325 of the UN Security Council, on women’s rights, peace, and security, are not fully upheld in Mali. Still today women are under-represented in the government.”

Mama Koité Doumbia, President – Malian National Coalition for the ICC
