What’s the ICC doing in Côte d’Ivoire?
The ICC prosecutor has been conducting an investigation in the West African country since October 2011. Former president Laurent Gbagbo is set to face trial in The Hague this year, charged with orchestrating crimes against humanity during an electoral crisis in 2011. The leader of a youth militia loyal to Gbagbo is also set to face trial for similar alleged crimes. Simone Gbagbo, the wife of the former president, is also accused of alleged crimes against humanity and is currently in detention in Côte d’Ivoire and subject to domestic proceedings, although the ICC has requested her surrender to The Hague.
