In a special Google+ Hangout in commemoration of International Justice Day, panelists discussed the relationship between the Security Council and the ICC, as well as the Council’s overall record on the prevention of and accountability for mass atrocities.
Panelists included:
- William Pace, convenor of the Coalition for the ICC;
- Radwan Ziadeh, president of the Syrian Commission for Transitional Justice;
- Richard Dicker, director of the International Justice Program at Human Rights Watch; and
- Ambassador Christian Wenaweser, permanent representative of Liechtenstein to the UN.
The discussion focused on the situation in Syria, which the Security Council failed to refer to the ICC in May, as well as provisions included in past ICC referrals that make it difficult for the ICC prosecutor to deliver impartial justice. An initiative calling on permanent Council members to refrain from using their veto power in situations involving mass atrocities was also discussed.
